қалай алуға болады, сөз қорын молайту мақсатында қандай әдебиет оқыған жөн,
сөйлеу және жазу бөлігіндегі кез-келген сұраққа дайын болу үшін не істеу қажет
– осы және басқа да Сізді толғандырып жүрген сауалдарыңызға жауапты төмендегі
мақаладан табасыз.
Elena: What are the
top mistakes people make in Speaking section?
Ann: Not having enough content, that is, things to say. Often students who are
quite fluent in class, lose their nerve in the exam and go blank. This doesn’t
help. Students pay too much attention to being truthful when they should see it
as a game to win. If they don’t have an opinion about something they should use
that of their mother or their best friend or teacher. It doesn’t matter as long
as they have something to say. One other problem is not answering all the
points in the second part of the test, but going off on their own thing.
Elena: What are the
main problems that Russian students face in IELTS Speaking?
Ann: I think Russian students on the whole are quite communicative and have a
lot of ideas. Learning more complex vocabulary and incorporating it into their
speaking is one thing they could improve on. Also it is important that they
have enough to say, so they really need to think about a lot of issues and be
able to express themselves adequately about them.
Elena: What phrases,
linking words or grammar constructions produce a good impression on the
examiner?
Ann: There are a lot of phrases around agreeing and disagreeing, giving
your opinion, giving advice and other functional vocabulary that will
definitely give the examiner a good impression. It’s difficult for students to
spontaneously come out with these in an exam however, so a lot of training
needs to be given to do this. Using some idioms makes a good impression in
speaking. Conditionals should only be used where it is appropriate although the
examiner will be listening for the ability to use complex sentences rather than
simple sentences all the time.
Elena: Are there any
tips for speaking about the card?
Ann: Students should always make sure they cover all the points. There is a lot
that can be done to prepare for this part, as the topics are reasonably
predictable although there are a lot of them. Again they should remember that
they don’t necessarily have to tell the truth, if the truth is not interesting.
For example, they shouldn’t say to the question: What kind of Music do you
like? Well, I don’t really like music. They should prepare some kind of answer
even if it isn’t true. Talk about their best friends taste in music as their
own, if need be.
They can expand on the points by thinking about the formula — Reasons, facts
and examples. Therefore, any questions can be answered and then expanded on
with reasons about it, facts about it and examples of it.
Elena: Is the order
important when they speak about points in the card?
Ann: No the order isn’t important as long as all the points are covered.
Elena: What happens
if the student speaks about something irrelevant to the topic?
Ann: Yes, this will be penalized in part 2 especially, so it’s important
to stick to the topic. The student would probably be interrupted in part 3
anyway, so wouldn’t get very far.
Elena: Sometimes,
there are such questions which are difficult to answer even in mother tongue…
What can you advise in such cases?
Ann: This is about learning the content through reading and listening to
current events in the student’s country and internationally. It’s important for
students to really think about the different topics in relation to their
country. Part of the preparation for the speaking exam is preparing students
for these kinds of questions.
Elena: Is any part
of the speaking section more important than the others?
Ann: Probably parts 2 and 3 are more important than part 1 which is more
straightforward, but part 1 is important for giving a good first impression.
Elena: Are there any
common mistakes that your Russian students make in writing essays?
Ann: Of course the main common mistakes in writing are in the use of
articles. This is a widespread problem and often arises because in speaking
they don’t use them, so it’s difficult then to correct themselves in writing.
The conditional form is also used incorrectly, but this is true of a lot of non
native speakers. Otherwise in the academic writing module, it is getting used
to academic style and essay writing.
Elena: How much time
is needed to prepare for IELTS?
Ann: 10 weeks of at least 3 or more classes a week would
cover most of the topics that are covered in the exam. Over the 10 weeks they
should be reading up on current events of the year around the time they have
been doing the course from maybe magazines like Time, The Economist, New
Scientist especially for the Academic Module, and The New York Times, The
Guardian and newspapers like this online for the General Module.
They should be able to complete a reading test and a listening test within the
hour quite well to allow for nerves in the exam. Practice Writing tests should
also be able to be done to time quite well. It’s really about being able to do
practice tests quite well as it is much harder to do the actual test.
Elena: How do you
manage to help your students achieve higher marks in speaking?
Ann: This can be done by preparing them very carefully for part 2. Every
speaking lesson they should have one part 2 task to do spontaneously and one
that they have prepared. The one they did spontaneously in the previous class
would be the one they should prepare for the next class. They should take notes
about the prepared one in their vocabulary book under a special section, and
regularly review them, especially before the exam.
For part 3, it is necessary to give them vocab around certain themes like
health, education, cities, crime, culture and development issues, media and
technology issues, family gender and relationship issues, environmental issues
and work and business issues, and then have discussions on them. Also the
teacher can give students magazine articles to read in English from magazines
like New Scientist, the Economist and Time magazine, to give them content on
these issues.
Elena: Thanks a lot,
Ann. Your answers are so detailed!
Ann: Ok, I hope they’re useful also.
Elena: Sure thing!
This interview will be useful to read for all IELTS students.
What kind of
music do you like?” деген сауалға
"Well, I don’t like music” деп жауап
қайтарған үлкен қателік болады. Кішкене өтірік айту қажет болса да, басқадай
жауап ойлап табыңыз. Қажет болса, өз досыңыздың сүйікті музыкасын өзіңіздің
ұнататын музыкаңыз ретінде айта беріңіз. Өз жауабыңызды «Reasons, facts,
Times, The Economist, New
Scientist, The Guardian
